Westbrook changed quickly in the last census decade; Wikipedia, citing the 2020 count of about 20,400 residents, calls it the fastest-growing city in Maine between 2010 and 2020. Census Reporter's latest ACS profile counts roughly 9,575 housing units, and about one in eight residents moved within the past year. The ZIP code 04092 falls in hardiness zone 5b, which opens a wide plant list but not an unlimited one. The Maine Forest Service lists Westbrook inside quarantines for emerald ash borer, hemlock woolly adelgid, spongy moth and white pine blister rust, so new plantings lean away from ash and hemlock and toward species that are not already under pressure.
Westbrook's Parks & Forestry crew looks after city-owned trees and publishes their locations on a GIS map. Checking that map before a front-yard redesign shows which street trees belong to the city, and plantings near them are placed to leave their roots and canopy alone.
