Landscaping in Gorham, Maine.
Gorham sits between Westbrook and Standish, with Buxton, Scarborough and Windham on its other sides, and its land use reflects both halves of that position. The assessor's figures in the town's 2016 Comprehensive Plan show just over half of Gorham's roughly 31,000 acres in residential use, while farmland, pasture and woodlots enrolled in Tree Growth still cover much of the rural land.
Our residential landscaping work is design, planting, hydroseeding and seasonal cleanups, carried out by one crew. Weekly residential mowing is not something we sell. In Gorham that usually means turning a subdivision lot into a finished yard, or bringing order to a larger rural parcel where the lawn meets fields and woods.
Village lots and sixty-thousand-square-foot parcels
Zoning explains much of the variety. In the Urban Residential district around the Village, lots can be as small as 10,000 square feet where public water and sewer are available. The Suburban Residential district calls for at least 60,000 square feet, and a house lot in the Rural district needs 60,000 square feet per dwelling and 200 feet of street frontage.
A Village lot rewards tight, layered planting and a clean edge between lawn and bed. A Rural district lot is a different job: long frontage, a front yard set 50 to 70 feet back from the road, and a transition zone where mowed grass gives way to field or forest. We plan the lawn area around what the owner will actually maintain and let the rest become meadow or woodland edge. Hydroseeding the mowed area and leaving a mown path into the field is often a better fit for a rural Gorham lot than trying to turn two acres into turf.
Farm soil under the lawn
Gorham's plan cites NRCS soil data showing about 16 percent of the town's soils rated prime farmland and 42 percent rated of statewide importance, far above the county-wide shares of 5 and 19 percent. Pockets of active farming continue around the Hurricane, Kemp and Sebago Lake Roads in White Rock, along Westcott and Fort Hill Roads, and on County and Nonesuch Roads.
Good native soil helps, but on a house lot it has usually been stripped and replaced during construction. UMaine Extension recommends four to six inches of quality topsoil under a lawn and up to twelve inches for planting beds, adjusted to a soil test. We start with that test and build from it rather than assuming the ground is still farm-grade.
