Retaining Walls

A retaining wall is a structure first and a landscape feature second. Whether it is a granite veneer entry wall with lantern pillars, a terraced boulder hillside or a segmental block wall behind a new build, we engineer for the two forces that kill walls in Maine — water and frost — with proper footings, drainage stone and fabric behind every course.

What We Build

Retaining Walls, in detail.

1

Granite & Veneer Walls

Dry-laid and veneer granite walls, entry pillars and caps — the signature New England look, built to modern engineering.

2

Boulder & Terraced Walls

Natural boulder walls and terraced slopes that turn an unusable hillside into planted, livable ground.

3

Structural Block Walls

Geogrid-reinforced segmental block for driveways, foundations and grade changes that need serious retention.

Questions

Straight answers.

Why do retaining walls fail?

Almost always water. Saturated soil behind a wall freezes, expands and pushes. We install crushed-stone backfill, drainage pipe and filter fabric behind every wall so water gets out before frost can use it.

Do I need an engineer for my wall?

Walls over four feet or supporting a driveway or structure often do. We will tell you honestly when a stamp is required and coordinate it as part of the project.

Can you rebuild a wall that is already leaning?

Yes — and it is usually worth doing before it lets go. We salvage stone where we can, rebuild the base and drainage, and relay the wall so it does not lean again.
