Thick, healthy green lawn framed by tall pines in Cumberland, Maine
Service Area

Landscaping in Falmouth, Maine.

Falmouth sits between Portland and Cumberland on Casco Bay, with the Presumpscot River running through it and villages from Falmouth Foreside and Mackworth Point to West Falmouth, North Falmouth, Blackstrap and Highland Lake. It is a single-family town — about 81% of homes are detached houses, 84% are owner-occupied, and the median home dates to 1986.

About 12,400 people live here, and nearly 29% of the town's land is conserved or open space. Residential lots run from 20,000 to 60,000 square feet under the zoning, which leaves room for real patios, walls and lawns without the squeeze of a city lot.

Falmouth's pesticide ordinance

Falmouth is one of the few Maine towns with its own pesticide ordinance. Any business applying pesticides in town must register with the town first, and an amendment taking effect April 1, 2026 adds limits on substances not on the USDA allowed list, bans neonicotinoids and sets buffers near water. That makes cultural lawn care the core of a good Falmouth lawn: mow high, leave the clippings, aerate compacted turf, overseed thin spots and correct pH with lime — the approach UMaine Extension recommends anyway.

Around Highland Lake and along the Presumpscot, Maine's shoreland rules also apply: within the 250-foot zone, cleared openings in the buffer are capped at 250 square feet and tree removal is limited to 40% of volume over ten years.

Two utility zones, two kinds of job

Falmouth's 2024 Comprehensive Plan Update describes town sewer as covering roughly the area east of I-295 and along Route 1, Middle Road, Woods Road and Winn Road, with the rest of town on septic. Residents in the plan's public input raised wells drying up in summer. West and North Falmouth jobs therefore often involve a septic field in the yard and a water supply worth protecting, while Foreside jobs are more often about grading, drainage and hardscape on established lots.

The plan also recalls Brickyard Point, where bricks were once fired from local marine clay — a reminder that parts of Falmouth sit on heavy clay that holds water. Patio and walkway bases on that ground need full excavation to mineral soil, compacted gravel and a pitch that sends water away from the house.

Deer and the planting plan

With so much conserved land, deer are a fact of life: the plan counts 56 of 304 car crashes in 2022 as deer-related. Foundation and garden plantings in Falmouth work best built around species deer tend to leave alone, with the choice plants kept close to the house.
