Gorham carries a lot of trees for a growing suburb. The 2016 Comprehensive Plan counts close to half of the land the assessor classes as rural enrolled in Tree Growth, and deer wintering areas sit just north and south of Gorham Village. Many newer neighborhoods were cut into that forest, so yard trees are often mature pines, oaks, maples and hemlocks left standing at the edge of a lot.

Four quarantines in one town
The Maine Forest Service lists Gorham under quarantines for emerald ash borer, hemlock woolly adelgid, spongy moth and white pine blister rust. Emerald ash borer was first detected in Maine in 2018, and the state's quarantine now covers every town in Cumberland County. All true ash species are vulnerable.
For an owner with ash near the house, the arborist's job is to assess condition early, while the tree is still sound enough to treat or to take down safely. Hemlocks on shaded, wooded lots should be checked for the white woolly masses of the adelgid on the undersides of twigs. White pines, common across Gorham, are the host of blister rust, one reason Ribes shrubs are regulated nearby.
Pruning by the rules near water and wires
Inside the town's shoreland buffer, Gorham's code allows pruning only on the bottom third of a tree and protects the ground cover beneath it, so a view-pruning request near a stream or wetland has limits that an arborist has to respect. Outside the buffer, structural pruning while trees are young avoids the heavy cuts later.
Utility clearance is a separate program. The town announced that contractors sourced by Central Maine Power would be doing tree work in Gorham from January through June 2024 under CMP's tree care program. Private pruning around service drops and yard trees is coordinated so it does not conflict with that work, and browntail moth winter webs at branch tips are best clipped in the dormant season. Plant health care on shrubs, such as correcting soil pH, mulching roots and thinning crowded foundation evergreens, rounds out the work on newer Gorham lots.
