Windham is a wooded town. The Maine Forest Service reported more than 9,000 acres of timberland harvested here between 1991 and 2015, about 363 acres a year, and nearly 3,000 acres are enrolled in the Tree Growth tax program, according to the comprehensive plan. Houses built into that woodland collect a heavy leaf drop every October.
Fall cleanup gets those leaves off the lawn and out of the beds, cuts back spent perennials, finishes with the season's last mow and hauls the debris away.
Where the leaves go in Windham
The town runs a seasonal leaf and brush drop-off on Enterprise Drive, open for a few weeks from mid-October into early November. Leaves must come out of their bags, brush and limbs must be under 12 inches in diameter, and leaves and brush go in separate piles.
Because that site is open for a limited window, cleanup schedules often split in two: an early pass once most maple leaves are down, and a second after the oaks finally let go. Debris from a cleanup is hauled off with the crew rather than left for the homeowner to deliver.
Keeping leaves out of the water
Leaves raked to the shoreline or dumped into a brook are a source of nutrients. The town's water page lists five Windham streams, including the Pleasant River and Black Brook, as impaired, and names phosphorus as the main pollutant the lake plans are trying to reduce. On lake and stream lots, leaves come off the lawn and away from the bank, not over it.
Inside the shoreland buffer, the state requires existing ground cover and low vegetation to be left in place, so cleanup there is limited to lawn and bed areas and the natural buffer is left alone.
Browntail webs and bare branches
Leaf-off also makes winter caterpillar webs visible. The Maine Forest Service describes browntail moth in patches along the coast and up to 60 miles inland, feeding on oak, apple and cherry, and says webs within reach can be removed between October and March. A fall cleanup is a good time to spot them on yard trees.
Webs high in large trees or near power lines are a different matter; the Forest Service directs those to licensed arborists rather than homeowners on ladders.
