Much of Cumberland is wooded. The draft comprehensive plan counts about 2,246 acres of forested land and another 1,338 acres enrolled in Tree Growth, and it describes a rare oak-hickory forest north of Knight's Pond. That closing date sets the practical deadline for a Cumberland fall cleanup. Oaks tend to hold their leaves late, so a cleanup timed too early misses them, and one timed too late can find the dump closed and the lawn under snow.
Keeping leaves out of the storm drains
The town's stormwater page lists yard waste among the pollutants that reach Casco Bay untreated. Leaves blown into the road or piled at the curb wash into catch basins, so debris is collected and hauled away rather than left at the edge of the street.
In beds, spent perennials are cut back and fallen leaves pulled out so they do not mat over the crowns. The final mow of the season leaves the grass at a sensible height going into winter.
