Fall cleanup is a good time to look up. Browntail moth, established along coastal southern Maine, spends the winter as caterpillars in nests on host trees, and the Board of Pesticides Control points to winter as the time to remove them. Nests spotted on low branches during a cleanup can be noted for pruning while leaves are off.
All of York County is inside the Maine Forest Service emerald ash borer quarantine, which also limits moving hardwood firewood out of the area. Ash trees showing bark flecking or thinning crowns are flagged during the visit so their owners can have them assessed before they become brittle. Brush and trimmings from the cleanup are hauled off rather than left in piles.
Beds get their own pass. Spent perennials are cut back so stems do not collapse into a wet mat over the crowns, and leaves are pulled from under shrubs where they would otherwise hold moisture against the bark all winter. On the older lots near downtown, where beds run tight against foundations, clearing leaves from those strips also keeps gutters and downspout outlets flowing through the thaw.
