North Yarmouth's commercial ground is compact and specific. The 2018 Comprehensive Plan points to the Village Center triangle formed by Route 9, Parsonage Road and Route 115 as the heart of town, home to the Town Hall, Fire Rescue, the Wescustogo Hall and Community Center on the former Memorial School site, and locally owned businesses. Just north sits the Walnut Hill Parkway business park, about 62 acres with a mix of business parcels and the town gravel pit.

Properties approved through North Yarmouth site plan review carry landscaping obligations. The Land Use Ordinance calls for plantings along public roads and next to buildings, a landscaped border around parking, and at least one landscaped island in any lot with ten or more spaces, one island for every twenty spaces. Buffers between uses are supposed to screen year-round. Those islands and borders only keep doing their job if they are mowed, edged and cleaned up on a schedule.
New subdivisions in the Farm and Forest District must be built as clustered or open space developments under the ordinance, with at least half of each parcel preserved. Mowing routes on those properties are drawn around the common open space, trimming the edges clean and leaving the preserved land as it was designed.
Working over the Yarmouth Water District aquifers
The Yarmouth Water District draws from high-yield sand and gravel aquifers inside North Yarmouth, and the town's Groundwater Protection Overlay covers those recharge areas. The Comprehensive Plan notes no-spray agreements between the town, CMP and MaineDOT in recharge areas and a no-salt stretch of Route 9. For chemical application on areas over two acres in the overlay, the ordinance requires certified applicators, five days' notice to the Code Enforcement Officer and the water district, and no application on frozen ground or ahead of storms.
Commercial properties in that overlay get a program built around mowing height, clippings and cleanups first, which covers most of what keeps a site looking maintained without adding inputs to the aquifer.
Retention pond banks on commercial sites are part of the mow where a property has them, and spring cleanups clear the winter sand that plows push onto turf edges along the parking lots and drive aisles.
