Freeport's Comprehensive Plan lists the forest pests pressing on the town as the climate warms: emerald ash borer, Asian long-horned beetle, oak wilt, browntail moth, winter moth and hemlock woolly adelgid. It also records the Climate Action Plan's aim of a tree protection ordinance to keep tree and forest cover. Keeping established trees healthy is a practical priority here, not just a cosmetic one.

That makes late fall through early spring the season for finding and pruning out webs on Freeport hardwoods, before caterpillars emerge and their hairs spread across a yard.
Pruning inside the shoreline buffer
Chapter 65 allows pruning of branches on the bottom third of a tree within the 75-foot buffer, while the tree itself counts toward the point system the town uses to keep a well-distributed stand along the water. On Harraseeket and Casco Bay lots, that is the tool for opening a filtered view: careful limbing that removes lower branches without creating a cleared line of sight or a canopy gap.
The NRCS lists white pine, hemlock, red maple, spruce and birches as common on Lamoine soils, the town's most widespread series. Hemlocks along the shore deserve a close look for woolly adelgid, one of the pests the town's plan names, and pines on wet silt ground are watched for root stress after storms.
Plant health care on those lots leans on the basics: mulch rings instead of turf over root zones, water in dry late summers, and pruning cuts made at the branch collar so wounds close before the next winter.
