Much of Biddeford is mapped as Lyman soil over bedrock at 10 to 20 inches, and much of the rest as Scantic silt-clay or Naumburg sand, both with spring water tables near the surface. None of those let a tree anchor deeply. Trees on these soils are more likely to uproot in a saturated spring storm than trees on deep, well-drained ground, and a leaning tree with lifted soil on one side of its base is an urgent removal.
