Foundation beds in Cape Elizabeth often sit in shallow, acidic soil. The NRCS description of the Lyman series, mapped widely across the town's rocky upland, gives a depth to bedrock of roughly 10 to 20 inches and a reaction from moderately to extremely acid unless limed. A shrub set against a 1960s foundation may have far less root room than the bed outline suggests.
Perennial beds on Scantic silt loam, found in the flatter low parts of town, face the opposite problem: the soil is very deep but poorly drained, and plants that want sharp drainage struggle there. For a small tree to anchor a bed, the tree warden's approved native list includes serviceberry, hawthorn and American hornbeam, all of which stay in scale beside a Cape house. On unlimed Lyman soil, acid-loving shrubs settle in with less fuss than plants that prefer neutral ground, which need lime worked in before planting.
Mulch and weed control under the pesticide ordinance
Cape Elizabeth's Residential Pesticide Use Ordinance, effective December 2023 and revised in June 2024, limits cosmetic landscape pesticide use on residential property to exempt products such as OMRI-certified and federally designated minimum-risk materials. Weed control in beds becomes a matter of plant spacing, mulch depth and clean edges.
